SUNDAY, May 24, 2009 (calendar puzzle)

A note on the L.A. Times crossword page says that the online version of today's calendar puzzle will not be available today. I don't know if that means it will be available tomorrow or what. If it does become available, we'll post it here.

Los Angeles Times Sunday puzzle in Calendar section has a puzzle by Merl Reagl - where is Sylvia Bursztyn?

Since it's a holiday weekend, I'm going to guess she's on vacation. If it's the same Reagle puzzle that appears in the Philadephia Inquirer today, you can see Orange's post about it at her blog.

The theme in this weekend's Merl Reagle puzzle is fantastic, too! Merl's style is to have puzzles that are a little more challenging than the Bursztyn puzzles, but with an emphasis on entertaining whimsy and wordplay. Merl is one of the masters of the craft, which is why I've been solving and blogging his puzzles for four years.

The LAT Calendar puzzle is the same one as the PI Merl Reagle one that Orange blogged for today, it was a pleasant surprise. I enjoyed it much more then his typical punny puzzles. The anagrams were a nice piece of work, albiet streches at times.

so was Sylvia Bursztyn's puzzle permanently replaced by Merl Reagle's? or is she on vacation/hiatus, and Merl won't allow the LAT to distribute his puzzle? just curious.

The L.A. Times doesn't tell me its business, but:

1. I believe the Sunday L.A. Times has been printing Merl Reagle's puzzle for some time. Merl syndicates it himself (to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Washington Post, a San Francisco paper, and probably more), and the puzzle's also made available in the Across Lite format each week with his consent.

2. Ellen Ripstein mentioned some recent production problems that meant she wasn't able to proofread the Bursztyns for a couple weeks, but it sounded like she expected to be doing that again now.

Last I heard, it's a brief hiatus for the Sylvia Bursztyn puzzle. I haven't yet resumed proofreading, so any mistakes in the last few weeks are for puzzles I didn't see.
